Man Struck by RCMP Vehicle in Portage la Prairie, IIU Investigating

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating an incident in Portage la Prairie where an adult male was struck by an RCMP vehicle, resulting in serious injuries.

According to the IIU, the incident occurred on March 26 at approximately 9:15 p.m. The RCMP notified the IIU of the collision on March 27.

RCMP officers had observed two individuals who matched the description of suspects involved in a previous criminal incident. While one officer spoke with an adult female, an adult male fled the scene on a bicycle. A second officer, believing the male was under arrest and fleeing, activated his emergency lights and subsequently struck the male with his police vehicle. The collision occurred on St. George Avenue, between Cochrane and Eighth Street West.

The injured male was transported by STARS ambulance to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. He has been admitted to the hospital and is scheduled to undergo surgery for injuries sustained to his leg and shoulder.

The IIU has assumed responsibility for the investigation due to the serious nature of the injuries, as defined by their regulations.

The IIU is urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information or video footage that may assist their investigation, to contact them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
