A 42-year-old man is presumed dead after the ATV he was riding broke through the ice on the Winnipeg River in the RM of Alexander
Police say they were called to the area north of White Mud Falls around 1:00 am this morning, March 18, 2021, after two men attempted to cross the river. Both men and machines went through the ice but a 37-year-old male from Great Falls was able to pull himself out of the water. He was taken to a nearby home and treated by paramedics for hypothermia.
Officers heard the other male who was in the river calling for help as he hung to the ice. As police and a local volunteer firefighter made their way onto the ice to attempt a rescue the male began to struggle, went under the water and did not resurface.
Powerview RCMP and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team continue to investigate.
