Man ingests drugs in an alleged attempt to smuggle them into prison

A 26-year-old Anola man has been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking after RCMP suspected he may have ingested drugs in an attempt to smuggle them into prison.

Police say they came in contact with the accused when officers were flagged down on Selkirk’s Main Street at 3:25 am on Monday, January 9, 2023. Police say the person who flagged down the officers had picked up a hitchhiker who was refusing to leave the vehicle. Officers spoke with the hitchhiker and learned that he was wanted on outstanding warrants including a parole warrant. He was arrested and taken to the Selkirk detachment.

While at the detachment the man repeatedly asked to be taken to a specific corrections facility. It was at this point officers began to think the suspect may have ingested drugs. Officers took the man to hospital for his safety and shortly afterwards he passed a balloon filled with 34 grams of methamphetamine.

According to Staff Sergeant Kyle McFayden of Selkirk RCMP Detachment, a number of individuals have turned themselves into police so that they can smuggle drugs into prison. “Thankfully these officers recognized this and took precautions to ensure the male was not injured and the drugs were recovered. Ingesting drugs is incredibly dangerous and can lead to death,” said McFayden.
