Winnipeg Police Service has notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) that a male in their custody has died.
Police arrested an adult male on drug-related charges during a traffic stop in Elmwood around 1:00 am on Wednesday morning, November 4, 2020. He was taken to police headquarters.
Around 3:10 am the male was seen to be in medical distress and was unresponsive. First aid was given and the man was taken to St. Boniface hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The IIU is mandated to investigate deaths that occur while in police custody in Manitoba and has taken responsibility for the investigation.
