The province is reporting that a 37-year-old man in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre has died. The death took place on January 29, 2022.
Citing privacy concerns, Manitoba Justice is saying only that the man’s family has been notified, as has the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner – something that is required in circumstances like this.
Under The Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest is called to examine what happened in the case of most deaths of people in custody, with the goal being to see if something more could or should be done to prevent a similar death in the future.
