Man fleeing police smashes into patrol unit head-on

Winnipeg Police have a 23-year-old male in custody after he slammed the vehicle he was driving head-on into a marked police cruiser.

Police say that just after 10:30 pm on Friday, November 9, 2018, police spotted a vehicle near Main Street and College Avenue that they believed was involved in a hit and run earlier. As the suspect vehicle continued AIR-1 began tracking it allowing officers to follow from a safe distance.

The vehicle was followed to Ellice Avenue and Young Street where the driver drove directly into the patrol unit. The suspect then tried to flee on foot but he was arrested nearby.

The officers involved in the collision did not require medical attention. The suspect was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A search of the vehicle located a baseball bat and a samurai sword.

Joey Henning Boorsma from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with four counts of Assault Peace Officer With a Weapon and two counts of Possession of a Weapon.

He was detained in custody.
