The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a death while in police custody.
On October 23, 2022, a male was taken into custody by Selkirk RCMP under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act around 3:15 am. He was taken to the detachment and placed in a cell. Police say that while he was in custody they learned of other matters involving the man and he remained in custody. On October 24, around 7:10 pm the man was found unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.
The IIU took over the investigation as it involved an in-custody death.
