The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a man died in the custody of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) on August 7, 2023.
According to the IIU, WPS officers responded to intersection of Kinbrace Bay and McLeod Avenue after receiving multiple reports of a male with a weapon acting erratically.
The suspect retreated to a house in the 500 block of Oakland Avenue where he was taken into custody by officers. Once in custody, police were concerned for his well-being and requested medical help from Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. While waiting for paramedics the male became unresponsive and was taken to Health Sciences Centre in critical condition where he later died.
As this case involves a death in police custody the IIU is mandated to investigate. A request for a civilian monitor has been made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
Anyone with information or video footage is asked to call investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
