Seven injured in unprovoked attacks
On Tuesday February 7, 2017 seven people were attacked in downtown Winnipeg by a lone assailant.
It all began in the River and Osborne area just after 7:30 when a man assaulted a female for no apparent reason. The woman was hurt but did not suffer any serious injuries.
Five minutes later in an adult male was assaulted. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The next attack happened fifteen minutes after the first. At 7:45 am an adult female was assaulted in the area of Broadway and Edmonton Street. She was seriously hurt.
The suspect then moved north and in the Hargrave Street & St. Mary Ave area he assaulted another female victim. She was also hurt with non-life-threatening injuries.
Five minutes later at approximately 7:55 am another assault took place against a female victim. This victim was seriously hurt.
At 8:00 am a woman was brutally assaulted in the 300 block of York after the suspect approached the victim looking for a smoke. Her injuries were non-life-threatening.
The assaults stopped for the next few hours but at 10:30 am at Main Street and Pioneer Avenue an adult female became the seventh assault victim. Her injuries were non-life-threatening.
Winnipeg Police were able to identify the suspect and on February 11, 2017 28 year old Michael Ryan Fitzsimmons was arrested and charged for his alleged involvement.
Fitzsimmons faces the following charges:
- Assault Cause Bodily harm x 6
- Assault with a Weapon
- Mischief Under $5,000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 24
Fitzsimmons was detained in custody.
