Man bilked over fake gold jewellery

Winnipeg Police have issued a public advisory in connection to a fraud.

On July 8, 2020 a 24-year-old male was walking in the 3500 block of Portage Avenue when he was approached by a male in a vehicle.

The suspect made up a fake story about needing money to help travel to Halifax with his family. The man then showed the victim a large quantity of alleged gold saying it was worth between $5,000 and $10,000.

The victim offered to help the man out and purchased a significant number of gift cards in exchange for the gold.

After the transaction the victim took the gold to have it tested and discovered it was fake.

An investigation is ongoing.

Police warn that the public should be cautious when approached like this.
