A 29-year-old male is in custody after he attacked a Winnipeg Police officer trying to help him.
Police say that around 8:45 am on Sunday July, 7, 2019, they responded to a report of people fighting on Guayabera Avenue.
When officers arrived they found a male lying on the front steps. People inside the house told police the man had been injured.
As officers were checking his well-being the man became violent and punched an officer. The officer fell to the ground and the suspect then tried to take the officer’s sidearm.
The male was tasered and taken into custody. He was taken to hospital and while there, spit in an officer’s face.
John Wesley Sumner is facing charges for his alleged involvement of Assault a Peace Officer (x2), Resist Peace Officer, Disarming a Peace Officer.
Sumner remains in custody.
