On July 17, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a routine patrol by officers from the West District in Osborne Village led to an unexpected arrest. The patrol was part of the Violent Crime Retail Theft (VCRT) suppression initiative, focusing on areas with high retail theft rates.
The incident occurred at a large retailer located in the 200 block of Osborne Street. A male customer inside the store became confrontational with the patrolling officers, questioning their presence. Despite his belligerent behavior, he made a purchase and left the store.
The officers, concerned by his aggressive demeanor, followed him outside. They noticed two axes protruding from a bag he was carrying. Upon inquiry, store staff confirmed that the axes were not merchandise from their store.
The 36-year-old man was promptly arrested. He is now facing multiple charges, including Possession of a Weapon, Failure to Comply with a Probation Order, and Failure to Comply with a Condition of Release Order on two counts.
