On January 27, 2025, at approximately 9:40 am, the Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report of a theft in progress at the City of Portage la Prairie Public Works garage. The suspect, identified as Broderick Tkachyk, 29, from Portage la Prairie, had stolen a municipal grader and crashed through a fence, causing significant damage.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the suspect still within the fenced compound near the grader. Tkachyk refused to comply with officers’ demands and resisted arrest. During the altercation, officers and EMS personnel had to intervene, leading to the suspect being transported to a hospital for examination due to a non-life-threatening injury.
Authorities believe Tkachyk was under the influence of a drug at the time of the incident. After receiving medical treatment, he was released from the hospital and remanded into custody. He faces multiple charges, including Operation while Impaired by Drug, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Assault on a Police Officer (two counts), and Mischief Over $5000.
The Portage la Prairie RCMP continues to investigate the incident.
