A Winnipeg man faces multiple charges after a brief foot chase and an alleged assault on a police officer early Saturday morning.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the incident began around 1:11 a.m. when officers conducted a traffic stop on a taxi near the intersection of Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street.
Before officers could approach the vehicle, a 41-year-old male passenger exited the taxi and fled on foot. Following a short pursuit, the suspect resisted arrest and allegedly bit an officer. Police then deployed a conducted energy weapon (Taser) to subdue the suspect.
The suspect sustained minor injuries at the scene, while the officer was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and later released.
During the arrest, officers seized approximately 14 grams of cocaine (estimated street value of $1,380) and $200 in Canadian currency.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect was wanted on three outstanding arrest warrants.
The 41-year-old Winnipeg man is now facing charges for his alleged involvement of assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine) x 2, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
He remains in police custody.
