Man And Dog Die From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

On January 24, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an emergency call reporting a vehicle stuck in a snowbank on Nassau Street South. Inside the vehicle, they discovered an 84-year-old male, a 67-year-old male, and a dog, all unconscious due to exhaust fumes entering the passenger cabin.

By 2:14 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) was notified and promptly initiated an investigation. West District General Patrol officers confirmed the dog was deceased upon arrival, while both men were transported to the hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the 84-year-old later succumbed to his injuries, and the 67-year-old remains in critical condition.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fatalities resulted from carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by a snow-blocked exhaust pipe. Authorities have determined that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

In light of this incident, the Winnipeg Police Service urges the public to exercise caution when operating vehicles in snowy conditions or confined spaces. It’s crucial to ensure that the exhaust pipe is clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide build-up. Moreover, avoid sitting in an idling vehicle for prolonged periods without proper ventilation.
