No one was injured in a Lipton Street fire that officials say was caused by a malfunctioning dryer.
Emergency crews were called to the home just after 12:20 am on Sunday, January 5, 2020.
Firefighters encountered smoke coming from the structure as they arrived and launched an offensive attack.
People inside the home were able to evacuate before crews arrived. Firefighters did rescue a hamster that was in the building.
The fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes.
A statement from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says that damage to the home was minimized because the residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to call for help before the fire spread beyond the interior of the dryer.
Officials say that it is important when using a dryer to follow these tips to reduce the risk of fire:
1. Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order.
2. Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry.
3. Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed or restricted.
4. Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running.
5. Never leave a dryer running when away from your home.
