Male arrested after reporting false emergencies to 911

A 25-year-old male has been arrested after emergency services received dozens of fictitious calls to 911 in Winnipeg.

Police say that false reports of emergencies requiring the police or fire services to respond began in 2018 and continued until 2020. In that two year period 47 false reports were made.

Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit began an investigation. Police estimate that as a result of the false calls the cost of dispatching crews and the ensuing investigations cost the City of Winnipeg several hundred thousand dollars.

Investigators identified a suspect and on September 2, 2020, placed Harley David Lee Harding in custody. He has been charged for his allege involvement with Public Mischief and Indecent Communications.

Harding was detained in custody.
