In a significant crackdown on the illegal sale of unregulated tobacco and cannabis, the Selkirk RCMP General Investigative Section (GIS) and Manitoba Finance Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant at a business in Selkirk on April 24, 2024. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 42,000 illegal cigarettes, a small quantity of cannabis, and more than $18,000 in cash.
The officers arrested a 22-year-old male from Winnipeg in connection with the case. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was later released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in court in Selkirk on July 5, 2024. The charges he faces for his alleged involvement include Possession of Proceeds of Crime, Possession for the Purpose of Selling, and Unauthorized Distribution under the Cannabis Act. He is also charged with Possessing 25 or more units of unmarked Tobacco under the Tax Administration and Miscellaneous Taxes Act (TAMTA).
If convicted, the accused could face a mandatory triple tax penalty of over $40,000 under the TAMTA. The investigation into the case continues as the RCMP works to curb the illegal sale of unregulated substances within the city.
