Emergency crews responded to an apartment fire at 7:17 pm on May 19, 2023, in the 200 block of Quail Ridge Road.
Smoke from the fire could be seen from across the city.
The fire was fully involved with heavy smoke and flames coming from the four-storey structure as firefighters arrived on the scene. Crews attacked the blaze using hand lines and ladder trucks and worked for more than two hours before the fire was declared under control at 9:26 pm. Firefighters would remain on the scene until shortly before 3:00 am on Saturday, putting out hot spots and ensuring the blaze was out.
Everyone inside the building was able to get out. Firefighters searched the structure and rescued several pets including a cage full of birds. Animal services responded to the scene to care for the rescued animals until they could be reunited with their owners.
Officials say that the building had about 45 suites with about 180 residents. Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services Team and the Canadian Red Cross were on the scene to help residents find temporary accommodations.
One firefighter was injured during the fire. They were assessed by paramedics at the scene then taken to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The building suffered significant smoke, fire and water damage. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
