Mailbox thefts prompts RCMP to issue warning about identity theft

It is becoming a common thing among some thieves in Manitoba. Knocking over community mailboxes in the hopes of finding something of value like cash, credit cards, cheques or identification documents.

At some point overnight on July 22 to July 23, 2018, more than 100 individual mailboxes were broken into in La Salle about 30 kilometres south-west of Winnipeg.

Police believe that the thieves may have taken sensitive information from some of the mailboxes and are asking anyone who had their mailbox broken into to contact RCMP and to also protect themselves against identity theft.

Police say that if your mailbox was targeted by the thieves you should contact your financial institution, credit card company, the national credit bureaus (Equifax and TransUnion) and the  Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

RCMP are investigating the thefts and are asking anyone who may have cameras pointed in the direction of any mailboxes in La Salle to contact them. They also ask anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to call them at 204-888-0358.
