Literally shot himself in the foot? Misfire in tale about shooting

Investigation into a mid-day shooting incident on Maryland Street in Winnipeg on January 11, 2022, has ended with charges being laid against friends of the person shot.

Winnipeg police responded to the area in force around noon on Tuesday.  They found an adult male with a gunshot wound to his “lower extremity”.  The man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police were initially told that an unknown person had done the deed, but that story quickly unravelled following an investigation by the WPS Major Crimes Unit.

The police say it appears three young men aged 19, 18 and 17 years-old, who all knew each other, confronted two other unidentified males in the lane behind the 600 block of Maryland.  It’s believed the 19-year-old pulled out a concealed handgun and in the process accidentally shot himself.  The two men who had been confronted fled. The handgun was then taken to a suite in the area and hidden.

The weapon didn’t stay hidden for long.  Investigators obtained a search warrant for the suite and located two firearms and 40 various rounds of ammunition.

The 18-year-old and the 17-year-old youth face charges of storing a firearm or restricted weapon contrary to regulations. The 19-year-old remains in hospital.
