Lions Prairie Manor ordered to make improvements

The Lions Prairie Manor Personal Care Home in Portage la Prairie has had restrictions placed on their operating licence following a number of complaints.

An investigation into 21 complaints made between August 2016 and October 2017 prompted the restrictions after the Protection for Persons in Care Office (PPCO) deemed 17 of the complaints were likely to have occurred. Twelve of the cases were determined to have been cases of mistreatment.

“This investigation detailed a number of unacceptable incidents where residents were mistreated.  We will ensure residents receive a higher and more consistent standard of care,” said Minister of Health, Seniors and Active Living Cameron Friesen.

The 136-bed facility has been ordered that new admissions to the facility be suspended until further notice.

Staff are being directed about toileting residents during mealtimes, ensuring the manner in which residents are transferred is consistent with their care plans, and that all allegations of abuse and neglect are thoroughly investigated, regardless of the staff member’s employment status.

“Significant steps to remedy identified factors have occurred in the past six to nine months and we are committed to continue working collaboratively with residents, their families and the province until the facility fully meets all the recommendations,” said Jane Curtis, CEO of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Curtis said additional training has already been provided to staff, policies have been implemented and plans made to provide additional resources to the facility.

The licence with conditions will require:
•    new admissions to the facility be suspended until further notice;
•    the facility to comply with the PPCO reporting requirement within 100 days;
•    education is delivered to all current and new staff as outlined in the PPCO directions by no later than Dec. 18, 2018; and
•    the facility to demonstrate measurable progress that all staff are using the integrated care plan to deliver resident-centred care by no later than Dec. 18, 2018.
