Less traffic, faster speeds say RCMP

RCMP say that they are seeing less traffic on the roads across Manitoba but at the same time are seeing faster speeds.

Police say that drivers operating at dangerous speeds across the province have been charged including a 50-year-old Winnipeg man on Friday, April 24, 2020, who was caught riding a motorcycle at 178 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone in the RM of St. Andrews.

Police say the man was part of a large group of motorcycles travelling at a “high rate of speed” when he pulled away from the group.

Motorcyclist fined $1333 for speeding and $672 for dangerous driving (RCMP)

The motorcyclist was stopped and fined $1,333 for travelling more than double the posted speed limit as well as $672 for driving dangerously. He was also given a serious offence notice which leads to a licence review with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).

Less than an hour later the same officer who caught the motorcycle clocked a 17-year-old female driver going 150 km’hr in the same 80 km/hr zone. She was given a $966 fine and will also be called in for a licence review by MPI after being handed a Serious Offence Notice.

On the same night RCMP in Portage la Prairie spotted a vehicle travelling more than 60 kilometres over the posted speed limit just west of the community on Highway 1.

The 28-year-old male driver told officers his reason for speeding was that he was tired and in a rush to pick up dog food and get home.

Police issued the driver a $927 fine and an invitation to meet with MPI to review his licence through a Serious Offence Notice.

RCMP and other police agencies continue to patrol and watch for dangerous drivers.
