Legislation will soon allow testing of automated vehicles on Manitoba roads

The provincial government has introduced a bill to allow the testing of automated vehicles on Manitoba roads.

“Development of vehicle technology, including automated self-driving vehicles, is progressing rapidly worldwide and these changes will help make Manitoba competitive in attracting business and keeping pace with other jurisdictions,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler.

The proposed Vehicle Technology Test Act would allow the testing of vehicles using automated, advanced and alternative technologies on Manitoba roads.

The minister noted that before any testing could happen the province would develop regulations and a permitting system before the end of the year.

“By enabling developers to safely test emerging vehicle technologies on provincial roadways, we are supporting Manitoba’s large agricultural, trucking, heavy vehicle manufacturing and technology development sectors,” said Schuler.  “Numerous vehicle technologies are in development and ready for testing, creating opportunities for Manitoba-based business.”

As part of the proposed bill amendments will also be made to existing legislation for vehicle registration and insurance requirements for testing organizations.
