The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has announced the conclusion of its investigation into the tragic death of an adult male following a police shooting in Winnipeg nearly a year ago.
The incident occurred on February 13, 2024, when the Winnipeg Police Service were executing a court order under the Mental Health Act at a home in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue.
Officers encountered an armed male who had barricaded himself inside the home. In response to the escalating situation, the Tactical Support Team (TST) was called in for assistance. Upon entering the residence, a confrontation ensued, resulting in two officers discharging their firearms. The male was struck during the encounter.
Emergency first aid was promptly administered at the scene before he was transported to the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. Despite medical efforts, the individual succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The IIU took charge of the investigation as mandated under the Police Services Act. According to the IIU, a thorough inquiry was conducted, involving two subject officers, 13 witness officers, and interviews with seven civilian witnesses. Following the investigation, the civilian director of the IIU determined that the use of lethal force was both authorized and justified under the law. The investigation is now complete and the IIU has officially closed the case.
