Large brush fire near Carberry prompts evacuation Thursday

A large brush fire that started at an old military base known as Camp Hughes near Carberry Manitoba on Thursday afternoon, April 1, 2021, prompted the evacuation of about 20 homes.

The fire started around 2:00 pm and quickly spread north due to high winds and extremely dry conditions towards a housing development on PR 351 about 13 kilometres west of Carberry.

Firefighters from Carberry, CFB Shilo, Wawanesa and Glenboro were on scene battling the blaze.

RCMP took to social media later in the afternoon advising people to prepare to evacuate with their pets.

The evacuees were able to wait out the fire in the Carberry community rink.

By 8:30pm the fire was extinguished and residents were able to return home.
