Protesters at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility were given a blow on Friday, July 14, 2023, after Court of Kings Bench Justice Sheldon Lanchbery ordered that a blockade set up on July 6, must come down as of 6:00 pm.
As the deadline approached city officials stapled a copy of the injunction to a placard near the protest. The placard was soon kicked over and was eventually burned.
Members of the Winnipeg Police liaison team returned to the site around 7:30 pm and handed out copies of the injunction to the protesters. One of the protesters set the injunction on fire bringing cheers from those gathered.
As evening turned into night the number of protesters at the blockade dwindled to less than 20 and dwindled to less than a dozen in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 15.
In a conversation with News4.ca protesters said they are prepared to be arrested and realized it is just a matter of time before police will force them from the road. They said their voices won’t be silenced and they have already initiated plans to continue their protest from the nearby encampment and at other venues including Prairie Green Landfill north of Winnipeg. Police believe that the remains of homicide victims Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran are at that landfill.
As the sun came up on the blockade there had been no sign of police overnight and those guarding the entrance to Ethan Boyer Way felt encouraged that the blockade was still standing.
As the blockade continued, the City of Winnipeg Public Works Department arrived with a crew and began a road paving operation on Waverley Street between the Perimeter Highway and Grandmont Boulevard adjacent to the blockade.
