Kidnappers behind bars after man abducted off the street

Two kidnappers are facing a long list of charges after they abducted a male victim off the street on June 8, 2018.

According to investigators, a 32-year-old male was walking in the area 0f Sargent Avenue and Victor Street when a van stopped beside him. Two people jumped out, hit the victim in the head and dragged him into the van. His hands were then bound and the abductors took his wallet, cash, banking cards and cell phone.

The victim was then taken to a Spence Street address, tied to a chair and assaulted by the suspects who demanded he turn over his PIN number.

The victim said that a garbage bag was placed over his head and he was forced to breathe in methamphetamine while the abductors held a knife to his throat. The man said that he was also hung out a window, burned with cigarettes and threatened with a gun to his head as the assailants tried to get him to give up his PIN.

 

 

The victim was able to escape after the suspects left the building after obtaining his PIN. He was treated in hospital and released.

Police investigated the incident and searched a home in the 500 block of Spence Street. There they found a number of items related to the kidnapping. Police also were able to find video surveillance footage that identified the suspects.

On August 11, 2018, one of the suspects was located and taken into custody near Ellice Ave. and Spence St.

The second suspect was arrested in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 18, 2018, near Bertrand Street and St. Jean Baptiste Street after officers received a call about a suspicious male in the area. When the male was arrested police found .22 calibre bullet and a number of break-in tools.

Boniface John Mason, 20 from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Kidnapping
  • Robbery
  • Possess Weapon
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Administer Noxious Thing with Intent – Endanger Life or Cause Bodily Harm
  • Use of Credit Card X2

Preston Anthony Kakegamic, 29 from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Kidnapping
  • Robbery
  • Possess Weapon
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Administer Noxious Thing with Intent – Endanger Life or Cause Bodily Harm
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Possess Break in Instruments
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance

 

Both accused were detained in custody.
