Winnipeg police are looking for a male suspect in connection to several arsons on Sunday night, August 15, 2021, including one that took the life of a 60-year-old Jung Shin.
Emergency crews were called to a fire in a two-storey house on Wardlaw Avenue around 11:00 pm on Sunday, August 15, 2021.
Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the structure as firefighters arrived. The fire had extended to a nearby commercial building that fronted on Scott Street.
The commercial building had a convenience store on the lower level and a residence on the second floor. One person self evacuated from the residence and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
A woman in her 60’s was rescued from the building and taken to hospital in critical condition. She died shortly afterwards according to police.
Investigators say that prior to the fatal fire that was started on Wardlaw Avenue and spread to 157 Scott street three other fires were set earlier in the evening. A debris fire was started at 151 Scott Street but burned out on its own, and two fires (137 Scott street and 369 Stradbrook Avenue) were attempted but unsuccessful.
Police say that they believe all four fires were set by the same suspect. Investigators are looking for a Caucasian male, approximately 30 years in age. He stands approximately 5′ 10″ tall with an athletic build. He has short light hair or possibly shaved head, wearing blue Adidas baseball hat, black t-shirt, black shorts, black footwear with white soles, black Covid mask.
