INVESTIGATION | MAN DIES IN CUSTODY AT REMAND CENTRE

Investigations are underway after a man in custody died Wednesday morning in the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

Manitoba Corrections and the Chief Medical Examiner’s office are looking into the cause surrounding the death of the male inmate according to provincial officials.

Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) Civilian Director, Zane Tessler, has also been notified about the death. The IIU investigates on and off-duty police officer-related incidents in Manitoba involving death, serious injury or alleged contravention of Canada’s  Criminal Code or other laws, as defined in Part 7 of The Police Services Act.

The identity of the male will not be released due to privacy concerns according to provincial officials.

Earlier this year another inmate died in custody after it was alleged that he was denied drugs that were prescribed for an epileptic condition.
