Investigation Launched into Serious Injury Involving Winnipeg Police Service

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has initiated an investigation into a serious injury sustained by an adult male involving the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).

On December 20, the WPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on December 19 at approximately 2:40 a.m. Officers were called to the 400 block of Furby Street in response to an intoxicated male armed with an edged weapon, reportedly attempting to stab someone. Upon arrival, officers encountered the male brandishing the weapon and issued repeated commands for him to drop it. Despite these commands, the male advanced towards the officers.

In response to the escalating threat, an officer deployed a conducted energy weapon, causing the male to fall on ice. The male subsequently complained of a sore leg and was transported by ambulance to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. Medical examination revealed that the male had sustained fractures to his right tibia and fibula. Following this discovery, the WPS notified the IIU.

Under IIU regulations, a broken leg is classified as a serious injury, mandating an investigation by the unit.

The IIU is appealing to any witnesses or individuals who possess information or video footage that could assist in the investigation to come forward. They are encouraged to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
