It is an issue that is becoming all too common, the sharing of intimate photos via the internet. Although it isn’t illegal for consenting adults to share intimate images of themselves with each other it is illegal in Manitoba if one of the parties shares those images with someone else without the consent of the people in the pictures or video.
A Portage la Prairie man did just that and the 18-year-old is now facing a charge of Distributing an Intimate Image without Consent.
According to Brandon Police, a woman complained that in January her ex-boyfriend had shared an intimate image of her with another person through an online messaging app. The woman provided police a screenshot of the message.
On Friday, February 2, 2018, the accused was arrested, charged and released. He will appear in court in March.
Under the Intimate Image Protection Act, a person distributes an intimate image if he or she knowingly publishes, transmits, sells, advertises or otherwise distributes or makes the image available to a person other than the person depicted in the image.
