A judge will determine who can participate in the inquest over the death of 28 year old Eric Daniels.
A standing hearing will be convened and interested parties can request official standing at the inquest. If granted they would be allowed to question witnesses and participate in the process of the inquest.
The inquest was called by the chief medical examiner and is required under the Fatality Inquiries Act when there is a police involved shooting.
On March 6, 2010, officers from the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to a complaint of an armed suspect near Sargent Avenue and Arlington Street. After arriving, they observed an individual, later identified as Daniels, standing on the street corner with a machete. Both officers drew their weapons and instructed Daniels to drop the knife, but instead he advanced toward one of the officers. Both fired and Daniels was struck several times. He was later pronounced deceased at the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg.
The purpose of the inquest is to determine if anything could be done to prevent similar deaths in the future under similar circumstances,
