Inquest into Remand Centre death called

The Acting Chief Medical Examiner of Manitoba, Dr John K. Younes, has called an inquest into the death the occurred in October 2016 at the Provincial Remand Centre in Winnipeg.

Russell Spence died in custody shortly after entering the Remand Centre on October 12th. He had been arrested by Winnipeg Police and taken to the Remand Centre at York and Kennedy. Following his intake he got into a physical struggle with corrections officers during a search of him. He was eventually subdued by correction and police officers. Four minutes later he became unresponsive. He was taken to hospital but they could not revive him and he died.

The inquest will look into the circumstances behind Spence’s death and will determine if anything could be done differently in the future to avoid similar deaths.

The date of the inquest has not been determined yet.
