Manitoba’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. John K. Younes, has called an inquest into the death of 43-year-old Machuar Madut.
On February 23, 2019, officers had gone to an apartment building on Colony Street for a disturbance call. When officers arrived they were assaulted by Madut.
According to reports officers used a taser and eventually, shots were fired.
Madut was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that Madut died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest is called when a person dies as a result of the use of force by a peace officer who was acting in the course of their duty.
The purpose of the inquest is to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and what can be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.
