The acting Chief Medical Examiner for Manitoba has called an inquest into the death of 24 year old Mark Dicesare.
Dicesare was shot multiple times by police on November 6, 2015 after it was alleged that he was driving in the area of Kapyong Barracks and pointing a gun at people.
The incident ended in a field near Lipsett Hall on Kenaston Boulevard when Dicesare’s vehicle was surrounded by police.
Dicesare was taken to hospital after being shot but he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was confirmed to be multiple gunshot wounds.
Under the Fatality Inquiries Act an inquest is mandatory when a person has died “as a result of an act or omission of a peace officer in the course of duty”.
The purpose of the inquest is to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and what steps could be taken to prevent a similar death from taking place.
The incident around the shooting of Dicesare is also under investigation by the Independent Investigations Unit of Manitoba.
The date of the inquest has yet to be determined.
