Injury during arrest leads to IIU investigation

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is looking into a serious injury during an arrest of a man in Winnipeg.

According to the IIU, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers spotted a stolen vehicle on Saturday, February 24, 2024, around 1:43 a.m. near Logan Avenue and Sherman Street. Police followed the vehicle being operated by an adult male until it stopped in the 1900 block of McDermot Avenue.

When the vehicle stopped the driver fled on foot but was quickly chased down by officers. Police used force to take the man into custody. Once in custody the suspect complained of soreness in his chest, left ribs, leg and back.

The man was taken to Health Sciences Centre where medical professionals confirmed he had suffered a collapsed lung and fractured ribs.

As those injuries are considered serious the IIU is mandated to investigated.
