The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult male in Thompson, which resulted in an injury requiring medical attention.
On May 10, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the IIU about the incident. According to the RCMP, on May 9 at approximately 12:31 p.m., officers attended an address in the first block of Ashbury Place to arrest a male wanted on an outstanding warrant.
Upon entering the residence, officers located the male in a bathroom. The male reportedly assaulted an officer, leading to a use-of-force encounter during his arrest. The male was subsequently transported to the Thompson General Hospital, where it was determined he had sustained a broken orbital bone.
The civilian director of the IIU has deemed it in the public interest to investigate the incident. The IIU is now appealing to witnesses or individuals who may have information or video footage that could assist in the investigation. They are encouraged to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
The IIU is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
