In windy conditions, all burning is prohibited in Winnipeg

Winnipeg Fire paramedic Service issued a reminder that all outside fires are banned in the city of Winnipeg when wind conditions are high.

Under the Neighbourhood Livibility By-law outside fires cannot be set when wind conditions exceed 25 km/h or in locations that could result in rapid spread of fire through grass or brushed areas.

“When conditions are windy, like what we are seeing today, the risk of wind-driven wildland fires increases greatly,” said Chief John Lane. “It’s imperative that residents closely monitor weather conditions before starting any sort of fire on their property or City property.”

The ban includes all open fires, backyard fire pits, fire pits in city parks and the use of solid fuel-burning appliances like charcoal or wood-burning barbecues.

When winds exceed 25 km/h the WFPS says that all existing open-air fire permits are suspended.
