The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into the cause of an in-custody injury that sent a female to hospital.
RCMP in Portage la Prairie say that around 2:31 pm on June 2, 2023, a female in custody was seen going into medical distress. Officers checked on the female, who was subsequently taken to Portage District General Hospital then transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for additional care.
RCMP notified the IIU on the same day the incident occurred.
As the female was in custody at the time of her medical incident and she was hospitalized it is considered a serious injury and the IIU is mandated to investigate.
