Improper disposal of smoking materials likely cause of Ridley Street fire

The improper disposal of smoking materials are being blamed for a fire in a Ridley Street bungalow on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 1:34 pm and when they arrived found heavy flames and smoke coming from the structure. An exterior attack was launched until it was safe for firefighters to transition to an interior attack. The fire was declared under control at 2:05 pm.

Fire officials say that preliminary observations point to the blaze being accidental in nature.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reminds residents to be careful when disposing of cigarette butts:

  • Dispose of cigarette butts in an ashtray or deep, wide metal container filled partway with sand or water.
  • If you dispose of butts in the trash, douse them with water first.
  • Never throw a butt from a car window or throw it on the ground, especially near grass, plants or anything that can catch on fire like a deck or shed.
  • Never put out a butt in a planter. Potting soil contains organic materials that can smolder and catch fire, even hours later.
