Suspect gets into traffic accident and is injured after fleeing police
Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged a 43-year-old male suspect after he was involved in a domestic assault at an apartment in the 1000 block of Andrews Street.
Police say that on August 13, 2017, at around 1:30 am officers were called to the apartment block to investigate the assault report when they found the suspect in a locked vehicle at the rear of the building. The male refused to exit the vehicle. Officers tried to forcibly remove him from the vehicle but the suspect started the vehicle, placed it in reverse and quickly backed up towards an officer causing the officer to jump out of the path to avoid being hit.
The suspect then took off in what has been described as a “high rate of speed” only to crash his vehicle into a fenced compound and several parked vehicles at the intersection of Main Street and Partridge Avenue. The suspect was injured in the collision and was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.
Kevin Garth Helm, from Winnipeg, faces a number of charges for his alleged involvement in this incident including:
– Assault Cause Bodily Harm
– Assault (x3)
– Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon
– Resist Peace Officer
– Driving While Ability Impaired
– Fail or Refuse to Provide Sample (Blood Demand)
– Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Helm was detained in custody.
