Province seizes illegal tobacco products, charge Ste Anne man

Investigators from Manitoba Finances’s Taxation Special Investigations Unit have arrested and charged a Ste Anne man after he was allegedly caught with over 120,000 illegal cigarettes and 2,000 grams of fine cut tobacco.

Officers seized the tobacco products along with two vehicles.

The 38-year-old suspect was in possession of contraband tobacco that was not marked for sale in Manitoba. He faces a number of tax-related charges as well as criminal code offences.

The province stood to loose more than $37,000 in tax revenue had the illegal products been sold.

The suspect is facing fines up to $10,000 and or six months in jail. If he is convicted he will also be subject to a triple tax penalty of $111,392.16.
