Manitoba’s police watchdog the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into a case involving a 46-year-old male who was hurt during an arrest by Winnipeg Police (WPS).
It happened on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, and according to the IIU officers with the WPS had responded to an apartment on Agnes Street because of a report of a man threatening others in an agitated state. Police attempted to arrest the man but he was armed with a hammer and resisted. Officers used shot the man with a taser and he fell down a flight of stairs. Having suffered an apparent injury the suspect was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with possible fractures to the neck and spine.
Under the mandate of the IIU, a fracture of the vertebrae is considered a serious injury and they must investigate the circumstances surrounding the injury.
The IIU is responsible to investigate all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba whether occurring on or off duty.
