IIU investigating after suspect suffers broken ribs during arrest

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is investigating an incident during an arrest that led to an injury of the 47-year-old suspect.

The IIU says that on December 31, 2018 Winnipeg Police responded to a break and enter on Boyd Avenue. Police found the suspect still at the scene when they arrived and had to use force during his arrest.

The suspect complained to officers of soreness to his ribs and he was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital. Doctors examined the man and determined he was suffering from a punctured lung and broken ribs.

Under their mandate the IIU must investigate the incident as the injuries are considered serious in nature.

The IIU is asking anyone who may have witnessed the arrest or who may have video footage or other information to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
