The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a suspect complained of being injured by Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers.
On November 22 around 2:00 pm police initiated a traffic stop in the area of MacGregor and Magnus. An individual attempted to run away but was caught by officers after a short foot chase. A struggle occurred between the suspect and the officers but the suspect was eventually placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station. Once at the station the individual complained of dizziness and pain to his head, he was taken to hospital, treated and released bak into police custody.
On December 1, 2016 Winnipeg Police notified the IIU that the incident had occurred.
Although there were no serious injuries to the individual, the IIU civilian director, Zane Tessler, has determined it is in the public interest for the unit to investigate the use of force used in this incident.
The IIU is asking anyone who has information or video footage that may assist this investigation to contact them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
