IIU stops investigation into collision after the driver admits responsibility

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has discontinued its investigation into a collision involving an off-duty Winnipeg Police Service officer.

The IIU took up the case on April 30, 2020, after Winnipeg Police reported that an off-duty officer was travelling northbound on King Street, on April 28, 2020, in a personal vehicle when they became involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The other vehicle had been travelling eastbound on Logan Avenue at the time when it failed to stop at a red light and collided with the officer’s vehicle. A passenger in the eastbound vehicle was injured and taken to hospital in unstable condition

The IIU says that during the early stages of the investigation the driver of the eastbound vehicle took full responsibility for the collision. According to investigators the driver admitted to running the red light.

In light of the admission by the driver the IIU determined they were no longer mandated to continue the investigation as the is “no culpable conduct on the part of the off-duty officer.”
