The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has cleared two Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) members after it was alleged by the WPS that the members had acted improperly during an investigation into an October fatal hit and run involving an off-duty WPS officer.

Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth reported to the IIU that he was concerned over irregular conduct by two officers assigned to the investigation into the death of 23-year-old Cody Severight.

IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler said in his report that he was not satisfied that the actions of either officer were intentionally done to interfere with or obstruct the ongoing investigation into the fatal pedestrian/vehicle collision. The IIU has determined that no charges should be laid against either member.
