IIU says no officers will face charges for January 2017 traffic stop

Winnipeg Police officers will not face any charges related to a January 2017 traffic stop.

Manitoba’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), has concluded it’s investigation into the incident where a male suspect was seriously injured during an arrest.

According to the IIU police made a traffic stop on Chancellor Drive near Pembina Highway on January 10, 2017 after they suspected a drug transaction had taken place. Police blocked a truck with their vehicle but the driver accelerated and crashed into them. He then drove over the median, crossed the eastbound lane of Chancellor Drive and drove into a field where his vehicle got stuck.

Police and the suspect struggled during the arrest and the suspect suffered a fracture eye socket.

The IIU said that once they completed the investigation they sent the file to Manitoba Prosecution Services for review. Their advice said that it was unlikely any of the officers involved would be convicted of a Criminal Code offence.
