IIU looking into a serious injury caused during an arrest

An 18-year-old male suffered a dislocated hip while fleeing from RCMP, according to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

The incident happened on December 23, 2022, in the community of Shamattawa. RCMP had responded to an incident at a Riverside Road residence.

When officers arrived a male suspect was seen fleeing on foot. The suspect soon slipped and was taken to the ground by one of the officers. After the suspect was in custody he complained that he was injured. He was transported to the Thompson General Hospital where it was learned he had a dislocated hip.

As a dislocated hip is considered a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has video footage that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-667-6060.
